The meteoric rise of the Crocs has been astonishing. How such gaudy plastic shoes could worm their way to the top the best seller lists in so many countries has fashion critics divided. They appear to be the Marmite of the shoe world, with the US and UK alike divided firmly down the middle. Love them or hate them, you have to appreciate that from a run of 200 pairs in 2002, increasing annual revenue to over $850 million by the start of 2009 is not bad going by any stretch of the imagination.
The company started by buying out Foam Creations, and after developing the Crocs Beach range and there has been no looking back since. The success of these shoes is in part due to the material used in their construction; a foam called Croslite. This soft material moulds to the foot after a little use, and has had many chiropodists singing their benefits for the support and comfort they give; ideal for patients with feet problems, and helping to prevent a generation from developing painful foot conditions. Colour is prominent in the design with many models offering up to 20 different colour choices, and the cool two-tone colour schemes. Bright colours and the option of customising shoes with clip on Jibbitz™ decorations has proved an instant success with the younger generation, propelling them even further forward.
Designed to offer extreme comfort, they are now being aimed at a workforce who needs to remain on its feet all day, and have proved particularly popular for nurses. Easy to clean and sterilise than many alternatives, they offer a cheap work shoe perfect for hospitals. Its not all been plain sailing with some countries banning their use in hospitals for fear of the static electricity which can build up, however by and large they still remain popular in the health industry, especially the models without the trademark holes. The ability to withstand sterilisation and even washing with mild bleach has made then the shoe of choice for the health sector.
Notable wearers of Crocs include a wide range of celebrities, and whilst comedian Bill Maher has started his own personal campaign against them, his criticisms have fallen on deaf ears. For the Americans, even the first lady has been spotted wearing them, and good old “W” has been photographed in a stylish grey pair complete with matching grey socks. Don’t let that put you off though. The presidential seal of approval counts for a lot in the US. A hideous aberration of fashion they may be to the purist, however the funky shoes continue to rise in popularity. Great colour combinations and amazing comfort make these one of the footwear sensations of the Noughties.
However the instantly recognisable models now have competition from within with a massive expansion in the Croc range with now includes Croc boots, Croc wedge shoes, croc slippers and Croc flips; each bearing little resemblance to the crocs of old.
The latest lines will have even the most vocal anti-croc proponents reconsidering their opinions, with a range of new materials offered including sheepskin, leather and fabric and a range of designs which are both colourful and stylish, offering something different for every occasion.
For 2010 the new male and female Crocband models offer the same legendary comfort, with a fabric heal strap to make sure they stay firmly on the foot. Both lightweight and hard wearing, they also feature insole nubs to help improve blood circulation to the feet and further improving foot health. Healthy feet have never been so trendy.
For the summer the men’s ABF™ Flips are tipped to be the big summer sensation, offering a unique ergonomic design and foot cushioning system to simulate barefoot walking without the discomfort. Remember, you heard it here first!
